Last night we saw the mid-season premiere of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the return of Grant Ward as HIVE. The episode, titled “Bouncing Back”, picked up almost immediately where we left off at the mid-season finale and highlighted Agent Coulson’s vendetta against Gideon Malick. Warning – many, many spoilers ahead. Continue at your own risk.
The mid-season finale showed us Coulson using his engineered hand to crush Grant Ward’s chest in as revenge for killing Rosalind. The final scene of the finale was Ward walking down the middle of the street toward Malick’s car and he is very much alive, but very creepy. During the hiatus Elizabeth Henstridge (who plays Simmons) accidentally let it slip that Ward was now going to be HIVE, which forced showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen to confirm that this was in fact accurate. We got to see Ward in his full on HIVE persona. With his chest completely sunken in, Coulson’s hand print still visible on his chest, and every single rib showing we witnessed Ward as HIVE eating pound upon pound upon pound of raw meat while watching several different television shows at once. He didn’t really do much except eat and be creepy but the final scene cut with HIVE releasing what I believe to be the parasites that live inside him to consume another person.
We also got to meet a new Inhuman who is given the nickname of Yoyo. At the beginning of the episode she is (not) seen stealing weapons from the local police in Bogotá, Columbia. Daisy and the team believe she must be invisible because no one saw her during the ambush. It’s later learned that she is actually very fast – as fast as she can run in one heartbeat. Once the team realizes she wasn’t stealing the weapons to use, but to dispose of them to prevent any harm they convince her to join the team and they set out to rescue Bobbi and Hunter who were captured by the same police. During the mission they run into another Inhuman who can temporarily paralyze people when he looks at them. This Inhuman is eventually captured and as they are taking him to the helicarrier he is rescued by Hydra. My guess is that he is going to be fed to HIVE – at least I think that would be an interesting turn of events.
Overall, I feel the episode left more questions than it answered, but I am excited to see where the season heads. I love the dynamics between FitzSimmons and I am hoping they get back to the romance-y part of their relationship. I was kind of shipping Mack and Daisy so I was a little disappointed in seeing her kiss Lincoln. I liked Coulson’s new hand and May’s comment about Coulson having now joined the Calvary. I am interested in what the storyline is going to be like for Bobbi and Hunter because of them leaving the show. I was almost expecting this episode to be it with the paralysis and abduction of them, but was glad to see that they will be sticking around for another episode. Hopefully this season will live up to the past seasons that we’ve grown accustomed to. You can check it out on the ABCGo App for Android or iPhone or on abc.com. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on Tuesday nights at 9/8c.
