Last week, JK Rowling dropped the news that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child script is going to be released in published in book form on July 31 (which happens to be Harry Potter’s birthday). And just to be clear, JK Rowling has made it very clear that this is NOT the 8th Harry Potter book.

Even with the adamancy of Rowling that this is not a book, my excitement is through the roof. Not a prequel either, the script is set nineteen years after the last Harry Potter book and is set up to be a two-part play to debut in London in June 2016. The cast is made up of people who certainly don’t look anything like the cast from the movies – especially Hermione. Jamie Parker will be playing Harry Potter, Paul Thornley will be playing Ron Weasley, and Noma Dumezweni will be playing Hermione Granger (Weasley at the time of the play.) However, the play does take place with our beloved main characters as adults and seems to be going to focus a lot on Potter’s son, Albus, so Daniel Radcliffe and company wouldn’t be ideal for the part age-wise, anyway.
The announcement that the script was going to be published came to us on Friday February 12, 2016; and by the time the day was up the pre-orders for the book had already skyrocketed to the number one spot on several bestseller lists including Amazon and Waterstones. Apparently, several bookstores are already planning a midnight release for the book as well. Maybe they will have it double as a birthday party for Harry.
There hasn’t been much released about the plot of the play and so far the only things we know for sure is that it takes place nineteen years after the last book — Harry is married with three kids, working at the Ministry of Magic, and his son Albus is facing some issues at school living up to the Potter name.
It looks like we have about four months to wait on the play and the book; so if you’re looking for something to do you can head over to Pottermore.com and read stories written by JK Rowling, get sorted into your house (GO HUFFLEPUFF), let a wand choose you, and explore the wizarding world. And I hope to see you all at the midnight release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child this summer!
