The Old School Convention happened last Saturday on February 10th at the Pleasants County School in Belmont, WV. We stopped in to see what this event was all about and ended up picking up some neat He-Man toys and comics.
The convention is a toy and comic show to raise funds for the students of Pleasants County, and this year they raised over $2000. The school gym and the surrounding halls were set up with folding tables for the vendors selling toys, games, books, shirts, movies, and art. The vendors we spoke with were friendly and very helpful to point out items to us and even suggested other vendors that we should check out in the hall with similar merchandise. There were a couple of face painting folks and one other convention (Causeacon) had a table set up to advertise their event and merchandise. Remix Pro Wrestling was there promoting their upcoming event(April 21 2018) that’s happening in Marietta, Ohio. Local favorite Classic Plastics Toy Store had a table at the Con as well as Chippie’s Anime.
My friendly local game store, The Arcane Games Store, was there as well doing a Magic: The Gathering deck building class and then hosting a Magic card tournament with the winner earning a spot in the store tournament coming up. As with any good con, there was a concession area set up in one of the nearby rooms converted into a gamer’s snack den of paradise: hot pizza, bagged chips, confections, and sodas to keep hungry folks fed and energized to walk the halls and see all there was. I bought a copy of the softcover edition of GURPS 3rd edition and enjoyed looking through a tableful of RPG books from the 80s and 90s, some of which I already had on my shelves. Overall it was a nice experience and everyone associated with the con was pleasant and helpful and I do believe I’ll be back next year.
