Let’s talk about The Walking Dead season six finale. Hello, Negan…Lucille – it’s nice to finally meet you.
Spoilers ahead for both the show and the comic. Enter at your own risk. I am going to start by saying that I have not watched one single episode of season six. I was caught up through season five and was DVRing season six to watch at my own leisure when I got tired of people posting spoilers all over Facebook so I deleted my recordings out of pure anger. However, I do know everything that has happened this season because I followed it online obsessively. And I did watch the finale…well the end of it anyway.
Earlier in the season when the announcement was made that Negan was cast and he was going to be played by Jeffery Dean Morgan I kept waiting to hear about his debut episode. I love JDM in everything he does – from Grey’s Anatomy to Supernatural to PS I Love You – he’s so sexy. Nothing ever came of it and I never realized that he wasn’t going to show up until the finale. The hype leading up to his entrance was so much I would have never guessed a season finale entrance. And let me tell you, he fucking nailed it. Social media was blowing up with a debate on whether it was weird to be so attracted to someone so evil. My vote is no – everyone loves a bad boy.
So after following the season online with Glenn’s almost death (I dressed up as Maggie for Halloween during this story arc), Carl losing an eye, and the romance of Rick and Michonne I was all hyped up to see who Negan was going to kill in the finale. There has been a lot of speculation and hundreds of articles and blogs written about it breaking down the likelihood of each character’s demise. I was following a live thread on Twitter all night hoping to catch the name of the fatality. I was refreshing my feed like a maniac. Finally at 10:29pm nothing had been disclosed so I turned on my TV as quick as I could and searched my 300+ channels for AMC only to stumble upon the beginning of Eeny-Meenie-Miney-Moe. That whistling gave me chills. I had read the transcript that was leaked and had spent a good amount of time trying to figure out who was being targeted. And let me tell you…that ending PISSED ME OFF. I guess I should just be glad I didn’t have to sit through all the commercials because from what I hear they took up 70 minutes of the 90 minute time slot. I couldn’t believe I stayed up past my bedtime for nothing. Absolutely nothing. And then I couldn’t sleep because I couldn’t stop thinking about who died.
The final scene was pretty damn close to the comics and in the comics Glenn dies. I’ve read a lot of good arguments about why Glenn doesn’t die with the most compelling being why would AMC have thestory line where we weren’t sure whether Glenn was dead or alive around mid-season only to have him live and then do the exact same thing in the finale. It seems redundant and played out, especially when there are so many other possible character options. However, my personal opinion is that is Glenn that was killed. I feel bad for Maggie. First Hershel then Beth and now Glenn. She’s pretty much just going to be alone forever. I feel ya, Maggie. Well, minus the zombies.
Another popular theory is for Daryl to have been the one knocked off. This would be a good deviation from the comics since he doesn’t exist in the comics anyway so the not much would change from comic to show other than Glenn gets to live. On the other hand, Daryl is the base of this show. He’s got the biggest fanbase and people will riot if he dies. I don’t think AMC can afford to risk it with killing Daryl off. There are entirely too many people who watch just because of Daryl and the ratings would tank if Daryl left.
The other option everyone is discussing is Carl. I haven’t read this far into the comics yet but from what I understand Negan and Carl end up having a kind of crazy fucked up relationship so my best guess is that it wasn’t Carl. Also, Negan says “If anyone moves cut the boy’s other eye out and feed it to his dad.” Why would Negan threaten that if he was just going to kill him in 30 seconds?
Well, anyway we have about six and half to seven months to wait it out. I don’t know about you guys but I am super pissed about the way the season ended. In the hiatus I’ll make sure I watch all of season six firsthand and I am also going to try and get caught on the comics to see if I can get any insight. Below I posted AMC’s official release of the last few minutes of The Walking Dead finale if anyone wants to watch it on repeat obsessively like I have been doing. Also, leave me some comments and let me know what you thought of the finale and who you think Negan killed!
